Mentor/Big Sister Job Description
The Old Stone Foundation mentoring/Big Sister program uses adult volunteers
to commit to supporting, guiding, and being a friend to a young mom for at least
one school year. By becoming part of the network of adults and community members
who care about the Old Stone moms, the mentor can help the mom develop and reach
positive academic, career, and personal goals.
Mentor Role:
- Take the lead in supporting a young mom through an on-going, one-to-one
relationship
- Serve as a positive role model
- Strive for mutual respect
- Build self-esteem and motivate
- Activities could include: talking and listening;
helping to clarify school, personal or career goals and accomplishing them;
working on homework; encouraging effective study or educational skills; playing
games or working on arts & crafts
- Promote regular attendance.
Time Commitment:
- Make a ten month (one school year) commitment
- One-to-one phone calls or in-person
meetings with mentee
- Communicate with the mentee at a minimum of twice a month.
- Attend an initial
training session, and an additional training session during the minimum of
one school year participation in the program
- Attend optional mentee/mentor group
events
- Document your relationship by completing all paperwork and turning it
in to Program Director.
Participation Requirements:
- Be interested in working with young moms
- Be tolerant and respectful of individual
differences
- Be willing to adhere to all program policies and procedures
- Be dependent and
consistent in meeting time commitments
- Attend mentoring training sessions as
prescribed
- Be willing to communicate with program staff, and submit activity
information
- Have a clean criminal history
Desirable Qualities:
- Willing listener
- Encouraging and supportive
- Patient and flexible
- Can provide a cultural role model for a young mom
- Have life experiences that
you can use in working with a young person
- Become a positive role model, friend,
and consistent part of a young woman’s life
- Committed to the relationship and
the success of the student!
